+ Lesson 1: 2D Rotations Tangrams Activity

Preparation Before Class

Tangrams Items Needed:

  1. Tanagrams

Activity

  1. Students work in pairs
  2. Each pair receives a set of Tangrams (two large triangles, two small triangles, one medium triangle, one parallelogram (or rhomboid), one square)
  3. Students take turns trying to recreate some of the printed tangram shapes focused on rotation objects in 2D.

+ Lesson 2: Iso Cubes Coded Plans Activity

Preparation Before Class

Snap Cubes Items Needed:

  1. Snap Cubes: Amazon Snap Cube Order

  2. Coded Plan Worksheet: Worksheet PDF

Activity

  1. Students work in pairs
  2. Take turns trying to recreate some of the coded plans (Iso Cubes) into the isometrics that they represent.

+ Lesson 3 & 4: Orthocubes & 2D To 3D Transparent Cube Activity

Preparation Before Class

Transparent Cube Items Needed:

  1. Clear cubes (4"x4"): Amazon Clear Cubes Order Snap Cubes
  2. Snap Cubes: Amazon Snap Cube Order

  3. Double sided foam tape

  4. Dry erase markers

  5. Paper towel for erasing

Build the Cubes:

  1. Create a bottom floor for consisting of nine white snap cubes that get taped to the base of the plastic box using the double sided sticky tape.

  2. To ensure the bottom floor created above is secure, you might want to add additional tape that connects from the base of the box to the sides of the snap cube floor.

  3. Build enough cubes so each pair of students has a cube, plus a few extra.

Activity

  1. Students work in sets of pairs of student
  2. First pair of students
    • One student in the pair creates a shape made of 5 snap cubes then gives it to their partner.
    • The other student draws all sides and top view of the shape on the plastic cube using a dry erase marker that is a different color than the snap cubes that make the shape! The student then writes the number of snap cubes on the clear plastic cube and has their partner check the drawings.
    • An instructor or TA must also check the drawn views. Otherwise the pair of students that they give it to will be confused (even good students need to be checked, since they get over confident).
    • Students take out the shape they used to create these views and hide it.
  3. 2nd pair of students
    • 1st pair of students pass the cube with orthographic views to the other pair and have them build the original shape from the views.
  4. Move up to 6 and 7 blocks
  5. For the next week have them repeat this activity using increasing number of blocks up to about 10 snap cubes. Adding just 1 block can be difficult, especially since students always try to make it challenging for their classmates.
